This is required for dietary supplement storage — non-compliant storage can be used against you in FDA audits.
Do I need a supplement-specific 3PL or will a general food-grade 3PL work?
A food-grade 3PL (SQF/AIB certified) can work for many supplement SKUs, but supplement-specialists understand FDA 21 CFR Part 111 requirements, Amazon's supplement compliance rules, and CoA documentation — which general food 3PLs may not. How do lot tracking and expiry dates work at a 3PL?
On receiving, the 3PL scans lot numbers and records expiry dates. The WMS flags inventory approaching expiry and enforces FIFO allocation — ensuring the oldest lot ships first. You should be able to pull a lot traceability report within minutes in case of a recall.
Can a 3PL handle my Amazon FBA prep for supplements?
Yes — supplement-experienced 3PLs know FBA's strict requirements: FNSKU labeling, poly-bagging for powders/liquids, carton weight/dimension limits, and expiry date labeling requirements (Amazon requires at least 90 days remaining shelf life). Non-compliance leads to costly FBA rejections.
What should I ask a 3PL about supplement storage conditions?
Ask about: temperature and humidity ranges in their storage area, pest control program and certification, cleaning and sanitation procedures, whether they store other product categories that could contaminate (strong odors, chemicals), and whether they have undergone a third-party food safety audit.
